ABRUZZO: OUR REGION

Abruzzo is a region situated in the Centre of Italy. It covers an

area of 10,798 sq km, and has a population of 1, 330, 103

inhabitants. It is divided into four Provinces: L’Aquila, Chieti,

Pescara, and Teramo. To the North it borders on Marche, to the

West on Lazio, to the South on Molise and to the East it is

washed by the Adriatic sea.

ETYMOLOGY

The word Abruzzo probably derives from Aprutium, the

Phoenician land of the Petruts.

GEOGRAPHY

It is a predominantly mountainous region (65%) and the

remainder of it consists mostly of hills (34%).The region has the

highest peaks in the Continental Appennine: Gran Sasso of Italy

(Big Horn 2912 meters) and Maiella (Monte Amaro 2793). Tha

flat area (1%) is a narrow coastal streep that follows the

coasline.
