Gymnasium Georgianum is a grammar school in Hildburghausen, Thuringia. It was founded in 1812, in 1877 was named after Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen (1826-1914).

Georg II was one of the greatest intellectuals among the higher nobility of his time. He is famous for developing the Meiningen Ensemble, designing highly detailed, historically accurate scenery, costumes, and properties and choreographing large crowd scenes. His ensemble toured Europe extensively, and had a great impact on theatre production across the continent. For his work Georg II is known as the first modern director.

In the 1990s the original school building was reconstructed and an annex with modern classrooms, an assembly hall and a cafeteria was opened in 1997.


Today 750 students, aged 10-20, attend our school, more than 530 of them come to school by bus or train.
When students come to our school in grade 5 they start to learn two foreign languages: English and either French, Latin or Russian. In grade 9 they can add a third language, mostly Italian.


We offer special P.E. classes in grades 5-7. After grade 8 students choose a branch they want to specialize in for the following two school years: mathematics/science, language, drama. Each year the drama groups perform a play to show how their skills have developed.


For grade 11 and 12 students can choose courses, they have to take two advanced courses with 6 lesssons a week and eight basic courses with 2 or 3 lessons a week. There are compulsory subjects like German, mathematics, foreign language, one science, history, social science, art/music, R.E./ethics, P.E. and electives like an addional science or language, IT or drama.


We participate in several projects - Comenius, eTwinning, School without racism, Moving School – and local and regional sports competitions. In addition to that we have reading and mathematics contest at school and often students qualify for regional contests in those fields.


Our students’ magazine ist produced by students from all age groups and published four times a year.


The performances of our choir, especially the Christmas and spring concerts, are usually well-attended.
